This annual month-long celebration returns in a big way this year to honor its 40th anniversary. And the best news is it’s always free to enjoy. In fact, the festivities are a gift to the community by the City and County of Honolulu in partnership with Friends of Honolulu City Lights—a tradition that started in 1985 by Mayor Frank F. Fasi.

Here is everything you need to know about this year’s Honolulu City Lights, from where to snap the best family photos to when to bring keiki to meet Santa.

What It Is

The grounds of Honolulu Hale and the Frank F. Fasi Civic Center transform into a winter wonderland with holiday displays, twinkling lights and special events. Gaze in awe at the 55-foot Cook Pine tree fronting City Hall, say hi to the giant Shaka Santa and Tūtū Mele figures, browse the city department Christmas trees and grab a treat from local food vendors.

New this year, wander through enhanced decorations and activations, including 250 feet of lighted tunnels, 50 illuminated trees, a keiki train ride and festive motifs lining Alapa‘i and Beretania Streets. The new displays were donated by Mike Gangloff of Show Aloha Land and his sponsors.

When and Where

Following the Opening Night celebration on Saturday, Dec. 7, Honolulu City Lights will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the Frank F. Fasi Civic Center Grounds and will run through Tuesday, Dec. 31.

Parking

Free public parking is available at the Frank F. Fasi Municipal lot, with entry from the left lane of Beretania Street just past Alapa‘i Street. If you wish to view the parade in Chinatown, several parking lots are in the area; however, you will need to park before the parade-related street closures start (approximately 5 p.m.). Also, you may have to wait for the streets to re-open to exit certain lots.

Opening Night

On Saturday, Dec. 7, the celebration kicks off at 4 p.m. with a block party featuring local food vendors along Punchbowl Street. The Public Workers’ Electric Light Parade begins at 6:15 p.m. down King Street from River Street to Kawaiaha‘o Street. As the parade passes Honolulu Hale, Mayor Rick Blangiardi will illuminate the holiday tree and lights decorating the grounds.

The parade features 57 units with marchers, floats, vehicles and bands. It will also be live broadcast on ‘Ōlelo 54, so tune in if you want to skip the crowds. Heads-up: there will be street closures—in the past, routes near the parade in Chinatown and Downtown were closed from 5 p.m.

The holiday festivities and merriment continue with a performance by Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winner Raiatea Helm and free photos with Santa in the Mission Memorial Auditorium.

Tips

  • Get your 2024 keepsake ornament! Each year, there are new designs which are sold as a fundraiser. Buy them at the event grounds, online or at all O‘ahu Macy’s stores and First Hawaiian Bank branches.
  • To avoid parade crowds, view the procession from Chinatown or Downtown. The area in front of Honolulu Hale will be packed! Note, bands will stop performing after they pass Honolulu Hale, so you’ll want to be positioned before Kawaiaha‘o Street.
  • Weekday evenings are less busy than weekends, so you’ll have a better chance of getting successful family photos in front of the displays. You could also visit during the day, but won’t get the full effect of the lights.
  • Dress in holiday attire and bring light-up toys, glow sticks and jingle bells for a full festive experience.
  • Waikīkī Trolley offers open-air bus rides ($35 adult, $25 keiki) to view the downtown lights and Honolulu City Lights, departing from Aloha Tower.

Kim chee may be a side dish, but it was certainly the main course at last year’s Kimchi Day Festival. Buoyed by the success of last year’s celebration, the festival returns to Makiki District Park Field in celebration of the 121st anniversary of Korean immigration in the islands. Join in the festivities with musical performances, K-Pop dancing, a talent competition and, of course, loads of kim chee.

Editor’s Note: Though the spelling of “kim chee” is commonly seen in Hawai‘i and HONOLULU Magazine, we will use “kimchi” when referring to the festival and day.

Tips

  • There is little to no seating or cover available on the field, so plan for the weather and bring mats and chairs if you want to eat at the festival.
  • Bring reusable bags or coolers to keep your food fresh and take your kim chee to go.
  • If you have your eye on a particular vendor or type of kim chee, try to arrive early, as some of the vendors sold out of kim chee last year within the first few hours of the festival!

Tips

  • Check out the American Savings Bank booth on Coral St. for free food, gifts, giveaways and a limited number of live screen-printed tote bags.
  • The vendor lines tend to get long as the night draws on, so plan to arrive early and grab a snack to ease your appetite as you line up for dinner.
  • Because parking tends to fill up early, consider ridesharing or carpooling, especially if you plan to drink at the beer gardens.
  • You can find restrooms in Our Kaka‘ako retail spaces, as well as two public restroom trailers in the alleyway behind H Mart and at the intersection of Auahi and Cooke St.
  • Payment type depends on each vendor, but most vendors take all forms of payment. ATMs are available at Salt at Our Kaka‘ako.

Passion for Fashion at Capitol Modern https://www.honolulumagazine.com/capitol-modern-first-friday-fashion-show/ Thu, 24 Oct 2024 18:30:01 +0000 https://www.honolulumagazine.com/?p=735529

Fashion returns to Capitol Modern with two local brands, Heavenly and Crystal Rose Label. They’ll be unveiling their new collections with a refreshing runway fashion show. Both founders are dedicated to slow fashion, and you’ll get to experience first hand their latest creations come to life.

Crystal Lee has always been mindful of her choices in what she wore, even from a young age. Her mother taught her how to sew her own clothes and where others saw old, tired garments, she saw exciting possibilities for reimagined styles. After studying fashion design at UH Manoa and being in the industry for 10 years, she created Crystal Rose Label. She describes it as a one-woman company “where she designs, cuts, sews, and packages everything at her in-home studio.” With an emphasis on handmade personal touches, she uses her craftsmanship to create one-of-a-kind works of wearable art.

On First Friday, she will be presenting her new collection “Beyond the Frame: Visions in Thread.” Using her chosen mediums of fabric and thread, she creates unconventional looks with ethereal vibes. “By transforming discarded and forgotten materials into unique designs, this collection celebrates the beauty of imperfection and the power and warmth of handcrafted artistry.”

Heavenly

Since 2016, Heavenly’s founder and designer Mapis Bernal has been on a mission to have people embrace slow fashion through her brand. Conscious of fast fashion’s negative impacts, each item of clothing made for Heavenly is carefully designed to connect the wearer with its core values of sustainability.

Originally from Bogota, Colombia, Bernal takes inspiration from her indigenous ancestors’ relationship with nature. With that in mind, she has dedicated her brand to generations of the future. Heavenly aims to “design and produce works that revolve around local and sustainable resources.” The brand also “emphasizes quality and longevity of a piece rather than mass production that exploits both the people and the Earth’s resources and environment.”

Heavenly’s latest collection “Ripple Realms” invites you to explore “a whimsical portal inspired by the enchanting elements of nudibranchs, ripples, distortion, optical illusions, perspective, delicacy, whimsy, magic and sustainability.” Bernal artfully combines all of these ideas to create clothing that challenges notions of what slow fashion may look like. She has a very catchy declaration: “Alchemy of slow fashion: turning tragic into magic.”

In addition to the fashion show, Capitol Modern will feature live performances by homegrown musical guests in the Sculpture Garden. Max High will take you on an electric dream with his original synthesizer-based compositions. R&B and soul singer-songwriter Alecia Kanamu will be sharing her graceful, tender songs, and Izik will make your heart skip a beat with his luscious vocals.
